How to Film Your Lifts for Form Checks (Angles, Height, Framing)
A bad camera angle can hide a good lift or invent a bad one. Film your squat from the front and you'll never see your hip depth. Film your deadlift from directly behind and you'll miss the bar drifting away from your shins. If you're going to spend thirty seconds setting up your phone between sets, spend them on an angle that actually shows the thing you're trying to fix.
Here's the setup that works for each major lift, based on what coaches consistently ask for when you send them a form check.
Squat: 45 degrees front, hip height
The classic "quartering" angle — halfway between front-on and side-on — shows depth, knee tracking, and bar path in a single shot. Put the phone at roughly hip height, 8 to 12 feet away. Too high and your depth looks shallower than it is; too low and everything looks deep.
- Checking depth specifically? Go straight side-on, lens level with your hip crease.
- Checking knee cave? Go straight front-on, but accept you're giving up the depth read.
- Keep your whole body plus the bar sleeves in frame for the entire rep.
Deadlift: side-on, knee height
Deadlifts are all about bar path and back position, and both read best from directly side-on. Set the phone at about knee height, 6 to 10 feet out. You want to see the bar's vertical line, your hips, and your upper back rounding (or not) at the same time.
A 45-degree rear angle is a good second option for sumo pullers — it shows both knee position and lockout without the plates blocking your hips.
Bench: 45 degrees from your feet, just above bench height
Straight side-on works, but a slight angle from the foot end shows elbow tuck, bar touch point, and butt-on-the-bench all at once. Height matters here: the lens should sit just above the level of the bench pad. Filming from standing height looking down flattens your arch and hides how far the bar actually travels.
Olympic lifts: side-on, waist height, wider frame
Snatches and clean and jerks cover a lot of vertical space, so step the phone back further than feels necessary — the bar overhead and your feet both need to stay in frame at full extension. Side-on at waist height shows the bar loop, your hip contact, and your footwork. If you're diagnosing early arm bend, a 45-degree front angle is the follow-up shot.
Tripod, ledge, or gym bag?
A cheap flexible tripod is the single best 15 dollars you'll spend on your training. Leaning your phone against a water bottle works until it slides mid-PR. If you use a ledge or bench, angle the phone slightly up rather than accepting a floor-level shot — worm's-eye angles distort depth and bar path badly.
Shoot in landscape for barbell lifts if you want maximum context, portrait if you want detail on one body segment. And use your phone's normal lens, not ultra-wide — wide lenses bend straight lines, and the whole point is judging straight lines.

One filming session is a form check. Fifty sessions is a technique history.
